Hoppy Set
DrinksHoppy is a beer-flavored, low-alcohol (0.8% ABV) beverage. You order a Hoppy Set, which arrives with a glass of shochu ('naka') and a bottle of Hoppy ('soto'). You pour the Hoppy into the shochu glass and sip slowly. It's sweet, light, refreshing—the opposite of heavy beer. The ritual of the set and the taste are what define Hoppy Street. Costs ¥600–¥800.
Gyu-Nikomi (Beef Tendon Stew)
MainsNikomi is the reason Hoppy Street was called 'Nikomi Dori' (Stew Alley). The best spots—Sho-chan, Izakaya Koji, Okamoto—have been cooking nikomi in the same pot for 50+ years. The beef tendon is tender, almost gelatinous, and absorbs the umami broth. Each bar has its own version. This is cheap comfort food that tastes expensive. Around ¥1,200–¥1,500 per bowl.
Edamame
Small PlatesA universal izakaya side. Pop the beans out with your teeth, toss the pods. Perfect for snacking while sipping Hoppy. No prep, cheap (¥400–¥500), and salty in exactly the right way.
Deep-Fried Ham Cutlet
Small PlatesA simple bar snack that works perfectly with Hoppy. The ham is breaded and fried until golden and crispy. Served with mustard or sauce. Nothing fancy, but comforting in its simplicity. Often served at Izakaya Koji and other bars.
Yakitori (Grilled Chicken Skewers)
MainsMost Hoppy Street izakaya grill yakitori. The meat is tender, the sauce tangy. Comes with a small glass of tare (dipping sauce) for dipping. A few skewers and a Hoppy Set is the classic combo. ¥100–¥200 per skewer.
About Hoppy Street
Hoppy Street preserves Tokyo's post-war drinking culture. Established in the late 1940s, the 300-meter alley is lined with old-school izakaya (pubs). The signature experience is a 'Hoppy Set'—you pour low-alcohol Hoppy beer over a glass of shochu (distilled spirit) and sip slowly. Food is cheap and hearty: nikomi (beef tendon stew) is the star, with each bar's version cooking in the same pot for decades. Lively 5–10 PM, quieter by 11 PM. Most close by midnight. Cash-only at many spots.

Just pick a bar that looks busy and welcoming. Walk in and sit at the counter. Order a Hoppy Set and ask what nikomi they're famous for. Most Hoppy Street bars are unfussy about who sits down.
A Hoppy Set is ¥600–¥800. Cheap. The whole point is lingering for hours over one or two sets, not drinking quickly. This is slow drinking culture.
Nikomi stew (¥1,200–¥1,500), edamame (¥400–¥500), and yakitori (¥100–¥200 each) keep the bill under ¥5,000 for dinner with Hoppy. Go with friends to share multiple skewers.
Visit 5–8 PM when it's loudest and most lively. After 10 PM it quiets down. Most bars close by midnight. Carry cash—many spots don't take cards.
